Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Wednesday 24.01.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Locally unstable conditions. Be cautious in steep terrain with wind slabs that could be triggered. Wind slabs are most likely to be unstable high up in alpine terrain.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 23. January 2024

Mountain weather

Tuesday 23. January 2024

3 mm precipitation, up to 8 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Breeze from southeast, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during renoon. -7 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 24. January 2024

No precipitation. Breeze from east. -12 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
